Etang Des Royales - Ben's Corner
Hi, I'm Ben Hofgartner and in this section you'll find my catch results and Weekly journal for Etang Des Royales along with hints, tips and advice for guests planning to visit our lovely French Carp fishing holiday venue.

November 2010

Sorry for the lack of information coming from me this season, the truth of the matter is I have not fished the big lake hardly at all this year. So it would not be fair to give advice as I feel out of tune with the water. Most of my fishing has been done on the catfish lake working on ways to catch these hard fighting predators. The results have been good as the catch reports show with many anglers seeing and catching fish bigger than themselves, sorry I rephrase that last comment, longer then themselves, with a few people nearly getting pulled into the water. Good fun!

Back to the big lake, still getting up 24/7 to see our big fish which are putting on up to 7lb per year. Only lost 3 fish last spring and none through the season. This I can thank you, our guests, for, except for a few exceptions. Also our anglers have agreed to get into the water with any large carp for photos and weighing. This makes it easier for you and less stressful for the fish as the thought of the damage that could be caused to a large carp being dropped even accidentally on the bank... ouch!! Let's eliminate any accidents before they happen.

There have been highs and lows with people catching more and bigger fish than ever before, people with 2 x 50lb in a week and unfortunately there have been people that blanked. Just remember - FISHING IS GOOD, CATCHING IS BETTER - but that's up to you!!

10th - 17th of October 2009

A nights fishing by Ben, 2 double runs resulting in 4 fish. First brace in the net, a 38lb and another 38lb! Time 12.30 am, recast the two rods and at 4 am while netting the first fish, the second rod was away and after a long fight, the second one was also in the net. Two large fish in the same net. Phew! The first one pulled the scales down to 50 ¾lb and the second no less than 54lb! What a nights fishing!! I was very pleased by the time I went to bed early that morning...

15th - 22nd of August 2009

Just a few hours spent on the carp lake after a couple of fish showed themselves ... No anglers so last chance before 14 guests arrived on Saturday, the 22nd. I caught a 26lb, 28lb, 51 ½lb and another catfish, that went across to the little lake, weighing 60lb. Yet another float fished cat of 65lb from the catfish lake.

Tight lines!

1st - 8th of August 2009

Taking full advantage of our holiday weeks, with no guests, Ben fished 6 nights and 6 days on his own, as I was otherwise occupied. Points to prove to himself - never preach what you cannot practice yourself!!! Job done with the following fish - 36lb, 40 ½lb, 36lb, 30lb, 28lb, 20lb, 2 x 20lb catfish, 40lb, 29lb, 35lb common, 37lb, 32lb, 44lb, 42lb, 25lb catfish, 28lb, 25lb, 41lb, 3 x 10lb cats, 25lb, 28lb, 39 ¾, 40 ½lb, 25lb, 23lb, 38lb, 25lb common, 20lb catfish, 42lb, 27lb, 43lb, 26lb, 24lb. Total runs - 40, 36 landed and those 4 losses were catfish estimated.

What else can I say? Good angling son!

November 2008

Now the gates are closed but our work carries on! We have had a very busy year with many PB's for our guests. Now is the time for Dad and I to watch our lake while maintaining the banks and swims and maybe... get a bit of fishing in, if we feel the time is right. We have to feed the fish ready for our guest next year!!! We decided to bait two areas every winter with our winter boilies, Bananas Royales, half a kilo in each area every morning and the same late afternoon, trying to fish two hours a day, two rods each in separate swims. This helps us to keep in tune with the water and our fish. Over the following winter months I will keep you updated with our progress. Thursday, 20th - 3 to 5 pm, Dad had one of the Twins at a new weight of 51lb. Friday, 21st - 11.30 - 1.30 pm, Dad (again!!!) had another take and landed Slate Grey at 58 3/4lb. Friday afternoon - my turn, 3 - 5 pm, I managed a fish that was transferred from the little lake - 49lb! Saturday, 22nd - 9 - 11 am, Dad had another one at 38lb.

March 2008

In two hours fishing on Saturday of March between 4:30pm and 6:30pm, my biggest brace of carp came out - Foxy Lady at 49lb and Slate Grey at 53lb. Both these fish have gained weight over the winter period. It all started on Friday 29th of February. Dad and I decided it was about time we started to put some bait into the big lake. As the weather was becoming settled 4 kilos of our winter bait was put into six different swims; this we will continue every day until the anglers take over. As always we decided to fish only two hours in a swim, two rods each. After baiting up I thought it would be rude not to fish for a couple of hours. By the time my baits were in the water it was 2pm and by 4pm I had four fish, two doubles and two 20's. Not a bad start! On Saturday, 1st of March I moved to another swim, same time span, two rods, one fish - a 29lb mirror - and one hook pull. Not very happy about that. Sunday Dad joined me and he had first a 34lb common, than in quick succession two mirrors at 39
